When he was nine years old, he drove a bat into one of his schoolmate’s head. This action spiral several years of being in and out of the Juvenile Correction Institution.

At one point, Walnuts decided that he had had enough of the school system so he left it and around the age of seventeen years old, Johnny Boy Soprano employed him. Johnny Boy was Tony Soprano’s father. This however did not prevent him from spending some time in the Army.

As time went by and as he built his reputation, he increased his standing within the mob. Paulie is known for his heated temper and his violent ways. Due to his temper he had sought out the help from a therapist in the past. Yet on the other hand, he do not particularly approves of any of his associates seeking therapy from a female therapist. His behaviour at times would lead one to believe that he might be suffering from more than just a temper problem; that is, a mental problem.

He went to see Carmine Lupertazzi who was in command of the New York organisation, to discuss switching over to that organisation. The sad thing was that Carmine did not even know who he was. At this point he realised that if he do not get back into Tony’s corner quickly, he would be left out in the cold, he rushed back to him trying to make amends by giving Tony some cash.

Walnuts lately found out that the person that her knew as his mother was after all not his birth mother. Instead she was truly his aunt. While his biological mother was the woman that he knew as Aunt Dotty. Aunt Dotty was a Nun and she was dying. His aunt had taken him in as her son to hid the scandal that his birth would have caused. This news hurt him terribly and he told his biological aunt that he wanted nothing more to do with her.
Shortly after the news about his mom and aunt was told that he was in the early stages of prostate cancer. Paulie would later tell Tony about his prostate cancer, but he also asked him not to tall anyone about it. He also told Tony that since the cancer was caught at a early stage, he was receiving treatment for it.
